Part 2: How to Fix Read-Only, Compatibility Mode & Password Issues

Have trouble editing or saving your Word document? Here are 3 quick solutions:

1. How to Fix "Read-Only" Document Mode

If Word shows Read-Only at top title bar and will not let you save changes:

  • Method A (Inside Word): Click yellow Enable Editing banner at top of page (or go to File => Save As to save a new copy with new file name).
  • Method B (In Windows Explorer): Close Word file. Right-click .docx file in Windows folder => select Properties => uncheck Read-only box at bottom => click Apply => click OK. Now open file again!

2. How to Fix "[Compatibility Mode]" Title Bar

If title bar says Document.docx [Compatibility Mode], it means your file was created in older Word (Word 97-2003 .doc format). Some modern Word tools are locked.

  • Go to File menu tab => click Info.
  • Click Convert button next to Compatibility Mode.
  • Click OK. Microsoft Word converts your file to modern .docx format and unlocks all new features!

3. How to Set or Remove Password Protection

Want to lock your confidential document or remove an existing password?

  • Set Password: Go to File => Info => Protect Document => Encrypt with Password => type your password => re-enter password => click OK => Save document!
  • Remove Password: Open document with password => go to File => Info => Protect Document => Encrypt with Password => clear all dots in password box => click OK => Save document!

๐Ÿ’ก Useful Tips for Word Users:

  • Tip 1: Use AutoCorrect for Fast Symbol Typing

In Symbol dialog, click AutoCorrect... button. You can set shortcut like \check to auto-convert to โœ“ whenever you type it in Word!

  • Tip 2: Always Convert .doc to .docx

Modern .docx file size is 50% smaller than old .doc file and prevents file corruption.

  • Tip 3: Never Forget Your Password

Word uses strong AES-256 encryption. If you forget password, Microsoft cannot recover your file for you, so write password down in safe place!

  • Tip 4: Shortcut to Save Copy

Press F12 on keyboard to instantly open Save As dialog box to save a new copy when file is stuck in Read-Only mode.
