Hello everyone! Today I show you one very important tutorial for making professional reports in Microsoft Word β€” how to set Header, Footer, Different Page Numbers, and mix Portrait & Landscape pages all inside the same document!

Many people create multiple Word files just because they want one page landscape or different page number. Don't do that! Use Section Breaks and you can do everything in 1 file. Let go learn!

What You Will Learn Today

  • Portrait & Landscape β€” keep some pages vertical (tall) and some pages horizontal (wide for big tables).
  • Header & Footer β€” put chapter title or company logo on top/bottom of pages.
  • Different Page Numbers β€” start page number 1 from Chapter 1 (skip cover page or table of content).

> πŸ’‘ Tip: The magic key for all these tricks is Section Break (Next Page). Section break divides your document into independent sections so each part can have its own settings!

Part 1: How to Mix Portrait and Landscape in Same Document

If you have a wide table or chart, you can change only that specific page to Landscape while keeping other pages Portrait.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Click cursor at the very start of the page you want to change to Landscape.
  2. Go to Layout tab on the top ribbon.
  3. Click Breaks => choose Next Page (this creates Section 2).
  4. Put cursor at the end of that page, click Breaks => Next Page again (this creates Section 3 for next normal pages).
  5. Now click inside your middle section page.
  6. Go to Layout => click Orientation => select Landscape.
  7. Done! Only that section turns landscape!

> πŸ’‘ Tip: Always press Ctrl + * (or click Show/Hide ΒΆ on Home tab) to see where your Section Breaks are located!

When you want Cover Page without page number, or different chapter headers in each section, follow these easy steps!

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Double click the top or bottom area of the page in Section 2 to open Header & Footer tools.
  2. Look at the top ribbon, you will see Link to Previous button is highlighted (blue).
  3. Click Link to Previous to TURN IT OFF! (This unlinks Section 2 header/footer from Section 1).
  4. Go to Header & Footer tab => click Page Number => Bottom of Page => choose your number style.
  5. If page number starts at 2 or 3, click Page Number => Format Page Numbers....
  6. Select Start at: and type 1 => click OK.
  7. Now Section 1 (Cover Page) has no page number, and Section 2 starts page number from 1!

> πŸ’‘ Tip: Make sure to turn off Link to Previous for BOTH Header and Footer separately if you want different headers and footers in each section!

Helpful Summary & Tips

  • Cover Page without Page Number β€” insert Section Break after cover page, unlink Section 2 header/footer, then add page number starting from 1.
  • Wide Tables & Charts β€” put Section Break before and after table page, then change orientation to Landscape.
  • Check Print Preview β€” before printing, go to File => Print to inspect all pages and check if headers, footers, and page numbers look correct.

> πŸ’‘ Tip: If page number disappears or changes unexpectedly, double click the header/footer and check if Link to Previous is accidentally turned on!
